Keep Traditions Alive with Custom Vietnam Veteran Challenge Coins

Spanning from 1962 to 1973, the Vietnam War is one of the most famous and infamous struggles in American history. The men and women who served during that time are some of the most courageous soldiers in history. Surely their time in the military, whether Vietnam was the only action they saw or they went on to serve during other conflicts, was marked by them earning multiple military veteran challenge coins for their constant acts of valor and accomplishments. Just because the fighting is over doesn’t mean the traditions have to end. Veterans are singular American heroes, and their accomplishments persist well past the moment they hang up their uniforms. For those reasons, specialty veteran challenge coins for our retired soldiers are called for.

With over 15 years of service under our belts, Signature Coins prides itself on offering consistently great customer service and high-quality products to our men and women in uniform, and we see no reason why that should end when their service ends. Our vets continue to find interesting and creative ways to serve their communities long after the term of their active duty, and their continued service deserves to be recognized. In addition to that, the accomplishments of Vietnam vets should never be forgotten, and custom Vietnam challenge coins are a great way to commemorate that.

Look to the Future While Commemorating the Past

The Vietnam War raged for 11 years. With that kind of timeframe, there are sure to be multiple battles and events worthy of commemorating for the veterans who lived through them. One such event would be the very first major battle to break out between regular U.S. and North Vietnamese forces: the Battle of Ia Drang.

On November 4, 1965, Lt. Col. Harold G. Moore took a collection of soldiers by helicopter into the Ia Drang Valley at the base of the Chu Pong Massif. Working off of military information, Moore expected to find one regiment of enemy soldiers in the vicinity. In fact, when he dispatched soldiers to establish a parameter, they discovered that there were three regiments of the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) stationed in the area.

What followed was two days of a brutal battle in which PAVN forces tried to push in and drive out the U.S. forces, and the members of Moore’s 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry fought to hold them at bay. With the use of strategic bombers, timely backup, and a lot of personal fortitude on the behalf of the soldiers, the U.S. forces succeeded in winning the battle.

It’s stories like that that perfectly showcase the spirit, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of Vietnam veterans, but they also only scratch the surface of experiences during the Vietnam War. The Battle of Ia Drang is only one battle set in one place that deserves to be commemorated with Vietnam veteran challenge coins. Some of the other specific operations run during the Vietnam War include:

  • Operation WHITE WING
  • Operation HASTINGS
  • Operation ATTLEBORO
  • Operation JUNCTION CITY
  • Operation MANHATTAN
  • Operations PEGASUS
  • Operation NAPOLEON
  • Operation WHEELER WALLOWA
  • Operation MACARTHUR
  • Operation GIANT SLINGSHOT

Vietnam Veterans Served in Multiple Different Units

One of the things we want to avoid at all cost is painting Vietnam veterans with a broad brush. Here at Signature Coins, we know that all Vietnam vets are individuals with their own personal experiences and memories of that time. One of the many things that set these unique men and women apart is the fact that they all served in very different battalions during the struggle. And each of those battalions is deserving of veteran challenge coins for their outstanding service and impressive feats.

Some of the units that served during the Vietnam War include:

  • III Marine Amphibious Force
  • 173rd Airborne Brigade
  • 4th U.S. Infantry Division
  • 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division
  • U.S. 101st Airborne Division
  • 3rd Marine Division
  • 1st Brigade, 9th U.S. Infantry Division
  • The Dirty Thirty
  • Raven Forward Air Controllers
  • 44th Medical Brigade
  • XXIV Corps
  • 15th Sustainment Brigade
  • 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment
  • Marine Air Control Squadron 7

Vietnam Veterans Continue to Serve

lower-vietnam-collage

After nearly two decades of serving the U.S. armed forces, one thing that’s become clear to us here at Signature Coins is that a person doesn’t stop being a soldier when their time in the military comes to an end. The drive to serve their country and their community is a strong impulse that doesn’t go away. In that sense, Vietnam challenge coins don’t simply honor the difficult work these men and women did overseas, but also the many ways they’ve continued to serve their communities in the years since the war ended.

The only congressionally chartered, national Vietnam veterans organization is Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). The VVA is dedicated to helping and serving Vietnam vets. Their organization focuses on providing for the educational, economic, health, cultural, and emotional readjustment of the Vietnam-era veteran to civilian life. Included in their mission are also efforts to educate the public about the Vietnam War and some of the struggles associated with being a veteran. Through the VVA, Vietnam vets are made available as guest speakers to students, educators and researchers across the country to aid in the efforts of educating others.
