Upgrading From A Challenge Coin to a Multi-Tool Challenge Coin

When a Regular Coin Won't Make the Cut

Bottle opener coins are some of the most popular challenge coins we help design, but they’re not the only kind of multi-purpose challenge coins that we make. Sometimes our clients are looking for something more versatile than just a bottle opener, and our team is always happy to help come up with some interesting ideas.

Custom multi tool challenge coins come in all kinds of different styles and shapes, and they can help with anything from fixing equipment on the fly to getting your uniform ready for inspection. Take a look at a few of the multi tool coins we have helped create in the past and let us know if you have an idea of your own!

Getting Inspection Ready

When a soldier is in uniform, their appearance and actions reflect on the entire service. Therefore, soldiers are careful to display perfect conduct and keep their uniforms in excellent form. There is a proper place for everything on a military uniform, and one of the toughest things to get right is the ribbon placement on the chest.

To make things a little easier, one of our customers came up with a simple tool for the job. Aptly named the Uniform Utility Tool, this custom challenge coin has three different points of measurement to help any member of the armed service prepare for uniform inspections on the fly.

The Navy, Air Force, Army and Coast Guard are each represented on the front face of the coin through highly detailed 3D images of well known military vehicles associated with each branch of service. We thought this was an awesome way of showing that the coin is adaptable and can help service members get ready for uniform inspections no matter their branch of service.

The two arms on the coin are clearly labeled ½” and ¼” and are perfect for checking alignment and small gaps. The ruler on the bottom of the coin is perfect for taking care of everything else. As long as you haven’t forgotten the proper measurements associated with your uniform, these multi tool challenge coins are easy to use and small enough to carry around at all times.

Coins That Are Ready For Anything

People from all walks of life carry things like bottle openers or pocket knives just in case the need should arise. Challenge coins like these are a popular alternative and can easily be added to key rings, backpacks or just carried around in a pocket.

This 4.5” long challenge coin serves as both a bottle opener and a socket wrench. Specifically, this coin has a 12 point, or double-hex, socket wrench that men and women working in Aircraft maintenance can use on the fly in most situations. Commander Mitchell Foy awards these coins to the soldiers in his command, and we love how the design is a celebration of soldiers from different nations working together.

This next coin has both a Philips head and flat head screwdriver incorporated in the design, a ¼” hex driver bit and, of course, a bottle opener cut out in the center. Multi tool coins like this are made from steel to ensure durability and longevity, even under constant use. Each part is completely functional and properly sized to work on equipment soldiers use in the field should the need arise. On the domestic front, a multi tool challenge coin like this is perfect for solving any problem around the house from removing a light switch to popping a cold one on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

multitool with keychain holder challenge coin

This is another bottle opener challenge coin we designed and the contact asked that we include a keychain to make it adaptable and portable. We were happy to make the idea work, and these coins can easily be added to key rings, backpacks, or whatever else a person has in mind. The point at the bottom of the coin is also a functional Phillips head screwdriver. What makes this coin special is that is was created in honor of the 243 Marine Corps Birthday and given out to members of the Naval Postgraduate School. The half blue and yellow design on the reverse side of the coin is a reference to the school’s coat of arms.

These coins show that you do not need to sacrifice beautiful design to make multi tool challenge coins. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball coin is dual plated in antique silver and gold to create a beautiful contrast in the classic eagle, globe and anchor design. The 3D mold helps add depth and meticulous detail to the eagle’s wings and curving lines on the globe. Likewise, the Navy Seal Museum coin is dual plated and utilizes 3D artwork to depict the Special Warfare insignia in the reflection of the mask.

Designing Multi-Tool Challenge Coins

Soldiers find themselves in some of the harshest environments in the world, and they’re required to bring only the most vital equipment and possessions along with them into the field. Challenge coins don’t always fit into that criteria, but they are traditionally carried at all times: at home and while on tour in the toughest places. They represent shared experience and understanding between a squad of soldiers, giving them a special place in a soldier’s rucksack.

Creating multi tool challenge coins adds an element of practicality to the design. While in the field, a multi tool challenge coin could make a difference when working on equipment or when you can’t find the right tool. No matter what kind of design you need, whether it be a uniform utility tool, a bottle opener, or some other kind of multi-purpose coin, you can be sure our team will be able to make the design work. Just give us a call and tell us your idea. We will make sure to create something unique for you and your team.
