Known as “America’s Health Responders,” the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC or USPHS) is a uniformed service of the U.S. under the United States Public Health Service (PHS.) The organization’s officers and members earn PHS custom government challenge coins in recognition of their responsibilities providing a host of health-related services to the public across the nation.

Unlike many of the other uniformed services, the PHSCC is comprised of noncombatant medical experts and practitioners who provide key medical aid when needed. Their officers earn their organization’s custom challenge coins through their work on the field providing medical aid to those in need, in laboratories researching new breakthroughs, and in offices advancing health care. PHSCC officers most often deploy as part of the National Response Framework immediately after natural or biological disasters. Not an “armed force” in the traditional sense, PHSCC Officers work hand in hand with military organizations including the U.S. Navy on diplomatic health missions and may be militarized in times of war or national emergency.

Just like the challenge coins found in our nation’s armed forces, Public Health Service commissioned corps coins are often dedicated to the core values and mission of the organization. The core values of the PHSCC include “Leadership, Service, Integrity, Excellence,” and their officers are tasked with "Protecting, promoting, and advancing the health and safety of the Nation."

U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Responsibilities

The PHSCC provides over 6,500 health professionals ready to deploy worldwide in response to both natural and man-made disasters. As well-trained and highly-qualified health professionals, PHSCC Officers fulfill an essential role in public health leadership and service.

PHSCC Officers earn their challenge coins by performing exceptionally in health care operations and services including:

  • Public health planning and response against natural disasters and biological epidemics such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and infectious diseases.
  • Fielding medical services and provisioning health care in the immediate aftermath of an emergency such as in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.
  • Educating healthcare providers and consumers.
  • Conducting scientific research and educating the public about multiple medical and scientific fields.
