Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron Challenge Coins

The Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron (NWCRON) was an essential component of the Naval Expeditionary Ground Command, a naval “force provider of expeditionary capabilities to joint warfighting commanders.” NWCRON crews could number up to 300 sailors or marines and performed duties focused primarily on force protection, coastal defense, seaward security, and pier security. Challenge coins awarded to members of a Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron recognized the dedication and exceptional military services of the sailors. Even now, as the military transitions to the newer Maritime Expeditionary Security Force (MESF,) many sailors recall their experiences and bonds formed while fighting during Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the NWCRON.

At Signature Coins, we are honored to provide our services to the U.S. Navy in the development and craft of custom Navy challenge coins. Since 2000, our company has provided custom military challenge coins for clients in every branch of our nation’s Armed Forces. Many of our custom challenge coins can be found in the collections or pockets of both currently serving members of the military and retired veterans alike. With a team including military veterans, our team understands the importance of a well-designed challenge coin and dedicate ourselves to providing the highest quality products.

The Role of the Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron

As part of the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC,) the Navy Coastal Warfare Squadron provided a key bridge in the Navy’s capabilities allowing for sea to shore operations. Their responsibilities took servicemembers on joint warfare operations on land, sea, and ground to secure coastal forward bases and even operate underwater construction and diving deployments. The primary role of Naval Coastal Warfare Squadrons was to provide a team of trained and prepared units capable of immediately deploying and responding to potentially hostile situations. NWCRON forces were key during the 2003 Iraq war and engaged some of the heaviest fighting of the war.

Some of the responsibilities and units that made up the Naval Coastal Warfare Squadrons included:

  • Harbor Security - Generally, provided by units of Harbor Defense Units.
  • Port Defense - NWCRON servicemembers provided both seaward and land-based security details to ports.
  • Force Protection - Preventative strategies and security curtailing insurgent strikes against resources and personnel.
  • Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Units - Units of Navy servicemembers who deployed undersea to provide surveillance and communications.
  • Inshore Boat Units - Sea-based security forces focused on inshore aquatic environments.

Customizing a Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron Challenge Coin

proof

Signature Coins is a leading producer of expertly crafted challenge coins for the U.S. Navy and we make it our goal to understand the needs and unique cultures of our clients.

Like their representative organization, NWCRON challenge coins can take many different shapes and forms to honor or represent their commissioning organization. Commanders might commission their own simple challenge coin design to be gifted out to specific soldiers who have earned that commander’s regard or respect, while specific NWCRON units might commission their own unit-based challenge coins to be gifted to every member of a unit as a form of group solidarity between them. Just like the varied operations and capabilities of a Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron, our services offer a large variety of different customization options for clients looking to create a new challenge coin. Our representatives work with every client to make unique coins specific to each order including any special emblems, slogans, or symbols specific to the client’s order.

Signature Coins is devoted to providing consistent high-quality challenge coins for military customers. Our coins are sized anywhere between 1” to 3” and customers have a variety of both free and premium customization options including:

  • Shape - Most coins are shaped like circular metal discs, however, we can cut-to-shape challenge coins in any shape or size a client might request. We’ve created coins shaped like throwing stars, badges, emblems, or mascots. Whatever a client wants, we can make it.
  • Color - Choose to leave the coin in its natural metallic color or have it painted with up to seven colors on either side chosen from the full Pantone color spectrum.
  • Coin Edge - There are six different options to decorate the edge every coin, providing a unique look and feel to each order, and including both free and premium options.
  • Plating - Plate your coin in antique gold, silver, or copper to give it an aged and darker finish. High-polish options can create gleaming designs that stand out in the light. Clients can also choose to double plate a coin to create and highlight key details.
  • 3D Coins - Allow specific details or elements of a design to literally pop or stand out of a coin’s surface by ordering a 3D coin.
  • Offset Print - Offset printing creates an exact replica of an image or photograph on the surface of your coin.
  • Silk Screen - Create a perfectly smooth coin surface by silk screening your design’s colors onto the coin.
  • Epoxy Dome - Create a glassy and smooth finish over one or both sides of a coin with an epoxy dome.
