Unit Challenge Coins

Honor the Soldiers of a Specific Unit with Custom Challenge Coins

To a civilian, the organization of the branches of the U.S. military can resemble Russian Nesting Dolls. Within the Army, soldiers make-up a team, teams create a squad, squads form a platoon, platoons form a company, companies come together to make a battalion, and so on. It can be dizzying keeping all of it straight, but at the end of the day, one thing that’s easy to remember is that a soldier’s specific unit creates the basis of his or her family while they serve.

Units are a collection of soldiers grouped together with the same job, set of goals, and specific orders. They support each other and the other units and battalions around them to ensure victory in a conflict. Members of a specific unit often live, train and work together, building close bonds that go deeper than simply belonging to the same branch of the military. There are a lot of Marines, but only a few of them belong to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, and that makes them closer than ever. These bonds are best solidified with custom military challenge coins

At Signature Coins, we’ve spent over 15 years delivering the best custom challenge coins to every branch of the U.S. armed forces. We understand the bonds forged in service and the unique loyalty the men and women of the military have not only to their country but also to one another. Army and Marine Units

quote

The oldest and most senior branch of the United States military, the Army continues to be the go-to branch for any and all land-based struggles we find ourselves in. The members of specific Army units are trained in very specific and specified ways. They become experts in their particular field of combat. You’ll find these companies organized within Army units:

  • Rifle Company
  • Weapons Company
  • Headquarters and Service Company
  • Tank and Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) companies
  • Assault Amphibian Vehicle (AAV) companies
  • Artillery Battery

Each unit provides a specific task and fulfills specific duties in the accomplishment of their collective goals. The artillery battery, for example, consists of soldiers trained in the use of artillery, mortars, multiple rocket launchers, surface-to-air missiles, cruise missiles and so on. Their task is generally to cause massive destruction in order to better clear the way for their fellow soldiers.

The different Marine unit types and their general organization share a number of similarities with the Army. With the Marines falling under the Department of the Navy and standing as an amphibious branch of the military, their unit duties can span beyond just land-warfare tasks.

These differences between the units and their specialties show themselves not only on the battlefield. The individual Marine and Army units set themselves apart with unique badges, insignia, coats of arms, colors and mottos. All of these elements find themselves showing up in in the Army and Marine unit challenge coins created by Signature Coins.

Take Flight With Air Force Units

The Air Force is a branch apart in a lot of ways. Providing information, reconnaissance, and tasked with protecting the country’s vast skies, Air Force units are organized into “wings.” Each wing consists of a number of planes and is charged with specific tasks and responsibilities.

Some of the active wings within the Air Force today include:

  • 1st Fighter Wing
  • 2d Bomb Wing
  • 6th Air Mobility Wing
  • 9th Reconnaissance Wing
  • 19th Airlift Wing
  • 10th Air Base Wing
  • 12th Flying Training Wing
  • 21st Space Wing

Air Force units’ primary tasks and responsibilities are clear in the names of the wings. Like the units in other branches of the military, the different wings each have their own unique insignia and mottos. Surprisingly, however, not all of the insignia for Air Force wings feature images of wings or planes. The 2d Bomb Wing’s insignia, for example, features the image of four bombs on a multicolored background. Conversely, the 19th Airlift Wing (a unit responsible for supplying humanitarian airlift relief to victims of disasters, amongst other duties) features a winged sword in its insignia.

The units, their mottos, and insignia are all as unique as the men and women who serve within them. The brave soldiers who join a unit often embody the best aspects and traits of those units. Unit challenge coins are the physical embodiment of those traits, and they serve to strengthen the already strong bonds that exist between these specially trained soldiers.

Navy Units Make a Unique Splash

The U.S. Navy is a branch of the military that marches to the beat of its own drum. Its organization is divided between two chains of command, Operational and Administrative. The division of sailors is equally unique, being broken down into specific groups, fleets, and squadrons. From there, sailors tend to have a high level of attachment to the ships, carriers, and subs that they’re assigned to. The bonds forged between them are every bit as strong as those between soldiers in the other branches, but understanding how they’re organized can be a bit of a headache. In fact, according to the DoD, sailors entering the Navy are warned, “Before trying to understand how the U.S. Navy is organized, you should be forewarned that it is complicated.”

Some examples of fleets, squadrons and groups sailors belong to include:

  • Tactical Air Control Squadron 12
  • Carrier Strike Group Five
  • Destroyer Squadron Fifteen
  • Amphibious Squadron 1
  • Naval Beach Group 1
  • Naval Surface Group Mid-Pacific
  • Naval Coastal Warfare Group One
  • Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1
  • Submarine Squadron 15

As such a unique branch of the military, the unit challenge coins for the Navy deserve to be as unique and customized as the squadrons they represent and the men and women serving within them.

Fun Nicknames Make For Unique Challenge Coins

A fun tradition surrounding unique military units is the designation of special nicknames. While this will inevitably take place amongst the soldiers within the unit as well, the units themselves start the tend by earning their own nicknames and call signs. Typically, these names are derived from the insignia of the unit.

Unit nicknames include:

  • Old Iron Sides
  • Red Bull
  • Hell On Wheels
  • Yellow Jackets
  • Gunslingers
  • Bounty Hunters
  • Top Hatters
  • Black Aces
  • Kestrels
  • Argonauts
  • Golden Dragons
  • Screaming Eagles
