Honor And Support For The Department Of Defense

pentagon-collage

The Pentagon is the headquarters for the United States Department of Defense. 3.7 million square feet of usable space makes enough room to house 25,000 workers in the building. Even though the Pentagon holds over 17 miles of corridor space, it only takes 7 minutes to walk between any two points. The Pentagon is a constructional marvel and an example of innovation in design that has withstood decades of advancement. Even though construction began in 1941, today it is still one of the largest office buildings in the world.

The mission of every person working in the Pentagon is to defend the security of the United States and sustain American influence around the world. This is accomplished by providing lethal Joint Force for the Department of Defense. Leaders from all branches of the armed forces are stationed at the Pentagon, providing operational management of the military. Pentagon challenge coins are custom designed to honor the service of the men and women who staff the Department of Defense headquarters. They are also used to raise awareness of the Pentagon’s mission and values.

Pentagon challenge coins are custom designed to suit the needs of the main department within the Pentagon, including:

  • Army
  • Navy
  • Marines
  • Air Force
  • Coast Guard
  • National Guard
  • Joint Chiefs

Commanding officers and superiors working in the Pentagon commission Department of Defense challenge coins to symbolize the integrity, courage, and achievement of service members in the United States. Custom artwork shows sweeping views of the 29-acre complex and central court, Defense Department insignias and emblems, and commemorative dates referencing historical milestones and achievements.

Leaders who hand out custom Pentagon challenge coins are giving their peers a symbol of the mission of the Defense Department and a reminder of an employee’s personal influence and value in National Security efforts.

History of the Pentagon

The ground was broken on the site of the Pentagon on September 11, 1941. The War Department of the United States was growing rapidly and needed a new space to operate. At the time, the organization was spread across 17 buildings in Washington and was comprised of about 23,000 people. Coordination and execution of War Department operations were hindered by the current set up.

The Pentagon was designed by a man named Brehon B. Somervell. The unique shape was decided on because of a proposed location near Arlington National Cemetery called Arlington Farm. The land was once a part of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s estate. The designed was to be no larger than four stories tall so as to conserve the view of Washington D.C. and to accommodate for the steel shortage during wartime.

The site for the Pentagon was moved to a new location that did not require the unique shape to fit, however, the plans were finished and time was short. Construction got underway as planned. Upon completion, the Pentagon was comprised of 410,000 cubic feet of concrete all made from around 700,000 tons of sand taken from the Potomac River.

After the end of World War II, there were some plans discussed involving a refitting of the Pentagon as a hospital or school, however, the government commenced with a large-scale reorganization of the Military and the building was still needed.

Today, the Pentagon is home to a large number of departments and offices all working to ensure the defense of our Nation. Each department has a unique history and is made up of individual teams and personalities. Pentagon challenge coins honor the service men and women of the past and of today. They reference the incredible design and innovative approach to military organization that has defined the operational facets of the building since its inception.

A few of the departments that benefit from custom Pentagon challenge coins include:

  • Defense Intelligence Agency

  • United States Secretary of the Navy
  • United States Department of the Navy including the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps

Pentagon Challenge Coins To Commemorate Service
Honor And Courage

On September 11, 2001, American Airlines flight 77 was hijacked and flown into the side of the Pentagon in an act of terrorism that shook the entire world. The event happened 60 years to the day since construction on the site began.

The tragic events of that day will never be forgotten. A rebuilding program called the Phoenix Project was set into motion in the weeks that followed. The efforts of the renovation team succeeded in honoring the 184 people who lost their lives in the attack. A memorial park was opened to the public in 2008 with an illuminated bench for each victim whose life was lost in the attack. During a time of grieving, the Pentagon was able to slowly rise from the ashes and kindle a flame of hope in our Nation.

Each and every person working in the Pentagon is making a sacrifice of some kind in service to our nation. The events of September 11th are a reminder of the dangers that are inherent when dedicating oneself to the national security of the United States. It takes courage, integrity, and strength to succeed and to act as a beacon of hope to the Nation. Each member of the Pentagon’s working force deserves honor for their service. Danger will never be forgotten and the lives lost will always be remembered.
