History Of The NRA
Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate, both Union veterans, established the NRA in 1871. The aims of the organization were to provide rifle instruction and encourage marksmanship through the lens of scientific practice. It was a response to the lack of ability among the Union soldiers in their command during their time servicing the Nation. In the years to follow, the NRA would face troubles on the front of gun ownership rights and became a champion of second amendment for the American people.
The successful youth programs sponsored by the NRA have their roots as far back as the early 1900s. NRA Secretary Albert S. Jones campaigned for marksmanship clubs in schools, universities, and military academies all over the nation.
During World War II, the NRA offered the American government use of firing ranges and developed gun training and safety material for their use. In 1940, the NRA called to help arm Britain against the threat of German invasion and was able to gather more than 7,000 firearms for the cause. Over the course of time, the NRA has been involved with numerous programs and efforts to defend American rights, however, they have always stayed true to the cornerstones of gun safety, education, training, and marksmanship.
