Very few moments in civilized human history have the ability to change the course of the entire world the way the signing of treaties do. Conflict is something mankind has known since the beginning, but when powerful nations come together in the name of preserving peace and humanitarian ideals, great and unprecedented things can happen. The signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949 was just such a moment.

The signing of the treaty ensured a lasting peace between some of the world’s most powerful nations. Today, the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization dedicate themselves to finding peaceful diplomatic resolutions to any problems that may arise. However, as an equal parts political and military alliance, NATO also has the power to take more forceful action if diplomacy fails. A Brief History of NATO

In March 1948, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and the United Kingdom all signed the Treaty of Brussels, organizing themselves against the emerging Soviet threat that would mark the cornerstone of the Cold War. One problem with the Treaty of Brussels, however, was that the aligned countries weren’t collectively strong enough to combat the Soviet Union if battle broke out. More nations were needed to uphold the ideals of the Treaty.

To accomplish those goals, and in the interest of solidifying transAtlantic cooperation, the U.S. and other countries along the Atlantic Ocean were brought to the table. On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed and NATO, consisting at the time of 12 countries, was born. Since then, NATO has grown to include the following 29 countries:

  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • The United Kingdom
  • The United States
  • Greece
  • Turkey
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Czech Republic
  • Hungary
  • Poland
  • Bulgaria
  • Estonia
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Albania
  • Croatia
  • Montenegro

As established by the treaty, any attack on one of those countries constitutes an attack on all of them, and each NATO member is obliged to respond to such an attack in the manner they deem appropriate. It’s this collective show of force that works to keep the world safe. And although NATO prefers the diplomatic approach to quelling trouble, it isn’t above calling its aligned military forces together. This is exactly what happened in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

SHAPE Up or Ship Out With NATO Challenge Coins

Very quickly after the formation of NATO, it became clear that some kind of uniformity of the different military factions within the organization would be needed. To those ends, the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe or SHAPE was established. Originally located in France, the SHAPE was eventually relocated to Belgium. From the SHAPE, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe or SACEUR leads all NATO military operations. Certain universalities like the NATO phonetic alphabet and standard aircraft marshalling signals had to be adopted. A command structure and locations also had to be agreed on.

Each branch of the NATO command structure is deserving of its own unique challenge coins reflecting the values and insignia specific to that branch. In 2012, the NATO command structure was streamlined down from 11 headquarters to the following six:

Like branches of other militaries, these headquarters all function independently and feature their own leadership, while being organized under the larger NATO umbrella. The men and women working in these branches bring something different to the table and their efforts are perfectly represented by distinct NATO challenge coins.
