Respect and Honor for Innovation

The Los Angeles Air Force Base is home to the 61st Air Base Wing and is headquarters to the Air Force Space Command’s Missile Systems Center, The Space Missile Command (SMC). There are up to 1,000 private contractors in addition to the 3,000 combined military and civilian personnel employed on the base, all devoted to the same vision: “To forge an agile team that delivers innovative war-winning capabilities.” The base is considered to be the “birthplace” of the United States military space and ballistic missile program.

The base is also the home for a large number of military personnel and their families, retired military personnel, and a large number of Air Force civilians. The opportunity, therefore, for Los Angeles Air Force Base challenge coins is expansive. Challenge coins have been used within all branches of the United States Armed Forces since the tradition took hold in World War I. The purpose of a set of challenge coins is to build team unity, reward particular acts of valor after successful missions, and to express gratitude for the sacrifices and commitment of a specific team.

Signature Coins takes pride in creating custom Los Angeles challenge coins for local military, law enforcement, and corporations.  We can incorporate original artwork of storied landmarks, beautiful scenery, and incredible history of the area in our designs, as well as team emblems or mottos. Any design cues you think will bolster the emotional impact of your challenge coins can be included. Our staff of artist provides all of the tools you need to create a meaningful gift that will be carried with reverence as a symbol of your team’s achievements and future missions!

The SMC
A Pioneer in Space Technology

The Space Missile Command has a history wrought with innovation and incredible achievement. The technical advancements spearheaded at the Los Angeles Air Force Base listed on the SMC website include the development of the standard global positioning system (GPS), space situational awareness capabilities, defense meteorological satellites, military satellite communications, space launch and range systems, satellite control networks, and space-based infrared systems.

The origins of the SMC reach as far back as the 1950s. The predecessor organization, the Western Development Division (WDD) of the Air Research and Development Command, was brought together to create the Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. In the following years, the WDD designed, tested, and put into production some of the most devastating and technologically advanced missiles the world had ever seen including, the Titan (1 & 2), Minutemen (1, 2, & 3) and later the Peacekeeper ICBM.

In designing these missile systems, the SMC was able to head up the incredible scientific and technological advancement like GPS and spaced based infrared systems. All of these advancements aided in the precision, reliability, and power of their intercontinental ballistic missiles. Modified versions of SMC’s missile systems were used to carry their satellites into orbit. While the Space Shuttle Program was put on hold after the Challenger disaster in 1986, the SMC worked closely with NASA creating space satellite vehicles.

Today, the SMC has aided in the development and execution of many programs including manned space programs, anti-satellite programs, and missile defense programs. All of the crucial developments of the SMC at the Los Angeles Air Force Base have made space-based communications, navigation, surveillance, and meteorology all indispensable assets for the United States Armed Forces.

Los Angeles Air Force Base challenge coins exemplify the culture of innovation and competitive drive that is integrated throughout the SMC. Every person working on the base is apart of a rich history of victory over adversaries, and the pressure to maintain their position at the forefront of innovation in space technologies is immense. Challenge coins reward the dedication, sacrifice, and incredible achievement of your team. Custom design cues incorporate emblems, missions statements, and original artwork that evokes a sense of team pride and visions of the team’s future goals.

Air Force challenge coins are displayed with honor among teammates, family, and friends. Carrying them ensures that you will always have a reminder of your mission, of your commitment to your team, and of the successes that have gotten you to where you are today!
