United States Honor Guard Units
Each of the branches of the U.S. Military has its own honor guard. Stationed in the D.C. area, the honour guard units represent the military as a whole and the United States as a nation, and perform numerous ceremonies on behalf of the President of the United States. The units are not locked into duties in or around the nation’s capital either, they often travel around the country and the world when needed.
Specific honor guard units in the U.S. Military include:
United States Marine Corps Color Guard Platoon — This platoon presents the National Flag and the Marine Corps Battle Color at ceremonies throughout National Capital Region and across the United States in order to render appropriate military honors and to display the Marine Corps’ illustrious warfighting history.
Army Honor Guard Company (3rd United States Infantry Regiment) — This regiment conducts memorial affairs to honor fallen comrades and ceremonies and special events to represent the U.S. Army, communicating its story to United States citizens and the world.
United States Navy Ceremonial Guard — The Navy Ceremonial Guard’s primary mission is to represent the service in Presidential, Joint Armed Forces, Navy, and public ceremonies in and around the nation’s capital.
Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard — Represents the Commandant, the Military District of Washington and the United States Coast Guard through ceremonial operations held before world leaders and dignitaries.
In an example of the regular work getting done by the honor guard members, the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery is guarded by the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. British and Canadian Honor Guards
Outside of the U.S., the honor guard can be pulled from any number of places. Certain countries take a more holistic approach when providing protection to heads of state and dignitaries. In the Canadian Armed Forces, the ceremonial guard historically was pulled from the Governor General's Foot Guard and The Canadian Grenadier Guard regiments. More recently, however, members from each branch of the Canadian military can be tapped for service.
In addition to their regular sentry duties at the National War Memorial and Rideau Hall, the ceremonial guard performs a number of regular ceremonies and presentations. Included in these regular duties are the Changing of the Guard, the Governor General's review of the Guard and Trooping the Colour.
The British Armed Forces do not have dedicated ceremonial units. Instead, they rely on units from all three services not deployed overseas to rotate and share public duties at various major historic landmarks through the country. Traditionally, the five regiments of Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry perform ceremonial duties.
Regiments within the Household Cavalry that are often called on to perform such tasks include:

- The Blue & Royals
- Grenadier Guards
- Coldstream Guards
- Scots Guards
- Irish Guards
- Welsh Guards
In addition to these Army units, there’s also the Queen’s Colour Squadron which is the ceremonial unit of the Royal Air Force.
