The Fort was first established in 1853 and housed troops tasked with the protection of trade along the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails and was named in honor of Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Riley who led the first Military escort along the Santa Fe trail in 1829.

The “Big Red One”
The 1st Infantry Division that calls Fort Riley home has a history just as honored and varied as the fort itself. The Divisions nickname originated in World War I when the 1st Infantry became the first American troops to arrive in France. They were also apart of the first American victory in World War I at the Battle of Cantigny. The insignia of the Division is a large red colored number one emblazoned on their shoulders, and soon the imagery became synonymous with the 1st Infantry itself and with the Division’s habit to be first into battle and first to victory! They became known as “Big Red One”.
In World War II, the 1st Infantry Division earned their colors by aiding in the allied invasion of North Africa, Italy, and Normandy. As part of Operation Overlord on D-day, the 1st Infantry stormed Omaha Beach and played a crucial role in the victory of Allied forces. Continuing in the war effort, the Division serged onward and is the force responsible for liberating both Zwodau and Falkenau, parts of the German Flossenbürg concentration camp. The soldiers provided desperately needed food and medical attention to the starving prisoners.
Today, the 1st Infantry hold the title as the longest continuously serving division within the United States Army and has served and played vital roles in Vietnam, The Gulf War, as well as Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Members of the 1st Division are all apart of a rich history of combat proven men and women who deserve honor and glory for their bravery. Each day is a fight to live up to the motto “No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great- Duty First!”
