History of the 101st: A Rendezvous with Destiny!
The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), also known as the Screaming Eagles, was first activated in August 1942. Training for the first Air Assault team in the United States started at Camp Claiborne in Louisiana and eventually moved to Europe before their first mission. In 1944 the 101st became the first Allied soldiers to land in occupied France and were tasked with clearing the way for the 4th Infantry Division’s landing on Utah Beach as well as liberating the City of Carentan.
Their success was swift and soon after the 101st was assigned to spearhead Operation Market Garden; the defense of a narrow 16-mile corridor in enemy territory. The Division jumped into The Netherlands and fought against heavy odds at every turn. From then on, the 101st would continue to prove their courage in the face of battle, and talent in achieving victory. Just some of the campaigns that the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has been a part of include:
- WWII: Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe
- Vietnam
- Iraq: Operation Iraqi Freedom
- Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom
In his first address to the Division, Major General William C. Lee stated: “...we shall be called upon to carry out operations of far-reaching military importance and we shall habitually go into action when the need is immediate and extreme.” This is the essence the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); their constant readiness to jump right into the heart of the battle; to lead the charge! To spearhead the most critical military operations and accept nothing more than victory!
When first formed, no one could be sure what would happen with the 101st. They represented a brand new type of assault team that the United States Military had no experience with. Major General William C. Lee said famously, “The 101st Airborne Division, activated at Camp Claiborne, has no history, but it has a rendezvous with destiny.”
