It is believed that in ancient Rome, Legion soldiers were awarded an extra coin of payment on top of the week’s pay when they displayed courage in battle. Commanding officers would have the coins minted with emblems of the Legion. The intricate design became synonymous as a symbol of the bonus coin soldiers could earn through excellent service and courageous acts in combat.
